Shawn
Pyfrom Interview
September 2008
So most
people know you for your role as Andrew Van De Kamp in
Desperate Housewives. Can you tell us a bit about the
show and your character?
The show is about…well desperate housewives! Andrew is
the son of Bree Van De Camp, the red head, played by
Marcia Cross. At the start of the show, he was your
typical rebellious teen. As time went on, he evolved
into this man with malicious intentions, who basically
put his mother through hell for the first two seasons.
He got kicked out of the house at the end of season 2,
was homeless during season 3, and since then has started
to calm down. Now in season 5, we have jumped 5 years
ahead from where season 4 left off. Andrew now works for
Bree who has a successful catering company, and he’s
her assistant.
Are you
anything like Andrew?
There are some similarities. In the first two seasons,
Andrew and Bree had a very tumultuous relationship, as
you can tell from what I described. Growing up, my
mother and I used to bump heads a lot, as I’m sure
most teenage boys do with their mother. So I was able to
take some of my personal experiences and then intensify
it for the show. I never did anything too terrible for
my mother! Its funny how as the seasons go on, they’ve
somehow mirrored my relationship with my mother. Around
season 3 when Andrew started to calm down and make
amends with his mum, I started too. I guess that’s
what happens with every teenager and young adult.
Everyone goes through a phase where they’re trying to
grow up but their mother is still babying them. However
they grow up a little bit and learn to understand and
appreciate the person who was just trying to help and
support them.
So how
does it feel to be part on such a large show? Has it
changed your life at all?
I guess. It’s a regular job and that in itself would
change an individual. I’d like to say that it hasn’t
changed me as a person. I still treat everyone the same.
Just little things have changed in my life.
Do
people treat you differently?
Some people do. The people that I’ve grown up with
don’t. I always make an effort to make sure they’re
always around. You know their intentions are genuine.
When you meet new people, you have to question their
intentions. Not to the point that you’re paranoid and
think that everyone is out there to get something from
you. Over the years I’ve learnt that you can’t trust
everyone, so yes some people do treat me differently.
Fortunately, at this point, not too many.
Did you
ever have a crush on anyone on set?
When I first started working on the show, yes. When you
work with the same people for five years, the people
become your co-workers and your friends, so you don’t
look at them like that anymore. They’re still smoking
hot though! All of them!
Did you
ever have any embarrassing moments whilst filming?
Well last season I had to dress in drag for a Halloween
episode; I was dressed as Cher. I did get hassled for
wearing a dress, a padded bra, a wig, make up and heels!
I was so consumed that I was wearing all those things
and how uncomfortable they were, especially the heels,
(I don’t get how you women do those things! They’re
so uncomfortable and at the end of the day, women care
more about other women wearing high heels than men do!)
that I didn’t even care they were hassling me! It was
a painful experience! I definitely respect the fact now
that women put themselves through a lot of pain to dress
up and look good. Just a hint though, even if you guys
didn’t wear heels, I don’t think men would care that
much!
So what
upcoming projects do you have?
Well I worked on an Independent film called Tanner Hall,
during the writer’s strike. It’s currently being
submitted to film festivals right now. That’s the most
recent project, apart from the show.
Are you
also appearing on the Alyson Stoner Project?
Yes I also am taking part in that. One of my best
friends that I’ve known since we were young, Kevin
Schmidt, is good friends with Alyson and approached her
about making a dance video. Mind you, this kid is just
20 years old and he’s directed, produced and written!
He’s extremely ambitious and very talented! So he
approached me and asked me to do a little thing in the
video and I accepted! It’s just a little thing in the
background…I’m tagging a wall as she’s dancing. It
was good fun.
So is
Tanner Hall only going to be shown in festivals?
I heard that at this point it was in Venice and Toronto.
I haven’t had much information on it since we wrapped
the film. I think though that if it is received well in
the festivals, it will eventually get into cinemas.
And
now…it’s time for the random questions.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Always. Second. Guessing.
If you
could go anywhere, where would you go?
I really want to go to Iceland!
What are
your hobbies?
I paint. I’m teaching myself to play the
piano…I’ve actually written 3 songs already! I’m
very proud of myself because I haven’t taken a single
lesson! When I’m committed to something and I really
want to do it, I’ll be very good at it. I’m not very
good at the piano yet but I hope to eventually become
excellent. Soccer was one for a while…I used to love
it but I haven’t played it in ages.
Do you
have a myspace? If yes, what is it?
I actually don’t. The best way to contact me is
through fan mail. You can send that to my agent or
publicist.
